Dick King-Smith: a new website and a giveaway

dks

Dick King-Smith’s books have always been firm favourites with children, families, teachers, librarians and members of the FCBG. A brand new website has launched celebrating the work of this much-loved author, www.dickkingsmith.com. The site is packed full of information about Dick, his time as a soldier and farmer before he started writing, the menagerie of animals he looked after, and facts about all of his books from The Sheep-Pig to The Fox Busters and the recently reissued Sophie books. Layn Marlow’s illustrations bring the site to life, and there are trailers from films adapted from his books and footage from his TV career too. Resources written by literacy expert Prue Goodwin give tips on how to use Dick King-Smith’s books for reading for pleasure. She talks of the benefits of reading aloud to children, and how it encourages children to become readers themselves. Many of the recommendations she makes can be used with your group, for instance on leading a discussion around a book, asking children to talk about what they liked and disliked about a passage or a character, and getting them to work out what’s fact and fiction.

To mark the launch of the site, and celebrate the reissue of the Sophie books, we’ve teamed up with Walker Books to offer one winner a set of Sophie’s Snail, Sophie’s Tom and Sophie Hits Six. To be in with a chance of winning, please email clarehallcraggs@gmail.com with the subject “FCBG Sophie” and your (UK/Eire) postal address (you do not need to be a member of the FCBG to enter this giveaway). Email entries must be received by the end of World Book Day, March 5th. A winner will be chosen at random and notified by email the following week.
