Golden National Non-Fiction November Competition 2018

Design a Cake for FCGB’s 50th Birthday Party

To tie in with this year’s Food and Festivals Around the World theme, we have taken inspiration from Nadiya Hussain’s fabulous cookery books for children: Nadiya’s Bake Me A Story (Hodder, 2016), Nadiya’s Bake Me a Festive Story (Hodder, 2017) and Nadiya’s Bake Me a Celebration Story (Hodder, 2018).

Open to children’s book groups, schools and libraries in the UK, the challenge is to design a birthday cake for our very special celebration – the Golden Anniversary of the Federation of Children’s Book Groups. The design can be for a single, double or triple tier cake, or if preferred, a shaped cake. It could include the FCBG logo, feature our mascot bear #FedTed or be decorated with gold. Alternatively, the cake could be inspired by a favourite book, book character or author, or based on the Federation’s aim to bring children and books together. These, of course, are only suggestions!

While we will be looking for creativity and originality, the design should, ideally, be possible to recreate. We do not require a recipe, but details about flavours, colours and special ingredients will help us to imagine the finished cake!!

You are welcome to use any media you would like – pencils, crayons, pastels, paints, or collage, for example – on either A4 or A3 paper.

The entries will be judged according to three age groups: 5-7; 8-11; and 12 plus.

Entries should be submitted to Chris Routh, 3 Morlais, Emmer Green, Reading, RG4 8PQ by Friday 7th December 2018. Please write the name, age and group/school/ library on the reverse of each entry submitted. All entries will be non-returnable.

There will be a prize awarded for each age group, plus an overall winner, who will receive a set of Nadiya Hussain’s cookery books, plus a set of cooking utensils.

The winners will be announced in January 2019.
