National Share A Story Month 2009

The Federation have once again teamed up with Usborne, to launch the National Share A Story Month in conjunction with the Usborne Young Writers Award competition.

The launch event was hosted by two new groups Mendip and Yeo Valley, where two local schools were entertained and entranced by Sue Mongredien , author of Oliver Moon, Prince Jake and The Secret Mermaid.

Collecting Sue from Bath in the rush hour Karen Hellewell, National Co-ordinator and Sue inched, then crawled then finally tootled their way cross-country to Glastonbury to the Mendip Children’s Book Group.

Viktoria Tischer, Chair of the Mendip Children’s Book Croup, was already at Glastonbury First School where  Sue entertained and enthralled  200 years 1-3 for over an hour. She not only mesmerised them with imagining what if she had to rescue all of them when the teachers turned into green aliens with five eyes and gooey green skin but encouraged their ideas to create a story together.

At Yatton, Melanie McGilloway, Chair of Yeo Valley Children’s Book Group, warmly welcomed us, wearing the YVCBG  tee shirt and with a lovely book display supplied by Yatton Books and Prints, the local bookshop.

Again Sue worked her magic. The teachers and children were enthused by the session

Each group within the Federation can be involved in this event.  Each group will receive a CD containing five Usborne authors talking about the five story starters and writing tips which comprise the Usborne Young Writers Award. The closing date for entries is October so each group could use the CD as an event later in the year.  More details are available on Usborne's web site.
