Oxted Children’s Book Group
Oxted CBG is a thriving local book group, we have a large number of family members plus 14 local schools. Email Jackie Lomas (email@example.com) to find out about becoming a member.
The Group is lucky to be one of the 12 book groups in the country who are involved in testing books as part of the Red House Book Awards – members and pupils of local schools read and vote on newly published books. Each year four members are invited to attend the Children’s Book Award Ceremony, and this year our members were privileged to be chosen to present the Award to the Overall Winner.
Each year the Group invites a variety of children’s authors or illustrators to visit local schools and other events. Recently Sophy Henn, Matt Dickinson and Megan Rix entertained children at a number of local schools. In previous years Kes Gray, Nick Arnold, Laura Dockrill and Chris Bradford have all visited schools in the area.
We run activity and craft workshops during the year for children. Our most recent one was a Dragon Story and Craft Workshop in honour of the FCBG’s National Share-A-Story month. We read dragon stories, as well as got involved in a range of dragon-inspired crafts including decorating a dragon egg biscuit, making a fire-breathing dragon, decorating a dragon mask, colouring sheets and puzzles, making dragons and a dragon story corner.
The Group also holds a book sale each autumn for members, selling brand new and nearly new books, as well as having a book stall at other events throughout the year.
We have a Facebook page where we post information and news about books for children and young people, book-related events, as well as information about the Group – the Facebook page is open to anyone to read and ‘Like’.
